Collection: Tom Koken

Tom Koken uses simple motifs to build his artwork. After deconstructing an image and stripping away its previous associations, he rebuilds it by adding and overlapping elements until a new construction is formed. Koken explores the strengths and vulnerabilities of systems and networks, seeking connections that hold up but threaten to collapse or disintegrate at any time. His investigation of this visual infrastructure is driven by the act of drawing and making marks by hand. Koken received his BFA from The School of Visual Arts. He has exhibited in group and solo shows in the US and Canada, including Artists Space, MKG127, Drawing Center, and Hallwalls. His work is included in many private and public collections and he is represented by Alfa Gallery. Tom works from his studio in Brooklyn and lives in New York City.
